Scholar, librarian and literary critic. Graduate from the Moscow State University (Philological Department), Doctor of Letters (1971), Honorary Doctor of Letters, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA (2001). Author of over 150 publications related to library and literary studies.

President of Open Society Institute – Russia (Soros Foundation) (1995 – 2004), personally supervised programs and projects related to civic society, culture, public health, education, law, librarianship (“Pushkin Library” program in particular). Member of International Advisory Board, Network Library Program, OSI – Budapest (1994 – 2000). Founder and Chairperson of the Board, Institute of Tolerance in Russia (2004 –). Project Leader in Russia in the project “One Book – Two Cities” (a project of Chicago Public Library and Municipality). Member of American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (1996 –). Member (1991 –) and from 1994 Honorary Member of the Board of Directors, Russian Biblical Society. Member of National UNESCO Commission of Russia (1997 –). Member of Bureau of the “Memory of the World” International Advisory Committee, UNESCO (1997 –). Member of the Executive Bureau, Vice-President, First Vice-President of International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions IFLA (1993 – 1999). Co-founder and Vice-President of the Russian Library Association (1994 – 2004).
